What Is a Credit Card Billing Cycle?

October 29, 2026 · ProsperPath USA Team

A billing cycle is the period of account activity summarized on a statement. Knowing its dates helps you understand which purchases appear on which bill.

Start and close dates

The cycle begins after the prior cycle closes and ends on the statement closing date. Purchases posted in the cycle generally appear on that statement, though posting timing matters.

Closing date is not the due date

The closing date determines the statement period. The due date comes later and is the deadline to make the required payment. They serve different purposes.

How to plan spending

A purchase made just after a cycle closes may appear on the next statement, but do not rely on this to delay payment or spend beyond your budget. Pending transactions can post later.

Where to find the dates

Check the statement summary or your issuer app. If the dates change or you need a precise answer, ask the issuer how it handles weekends and processing times.

Key takeaway

Review your own card agreement and latest statement for the rules that apply to your account. If something does not look right, contact the issuer through an official channel and keep a record of the response.
